Disability Awareness Training and Development Projects
- City of Ottawa:
The Herrington Group has contracted to design and facilitate a customizable workshop in compliance with Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Customer Service Standard (O. Reg. 429/07). An additional component to the contract was to provide a “train-the-trainer” component preparing staff for disseminating the program internally to all municipal employees, volunteers and agents.
- Designed and facilitated a fully customizable workshop on Creating Accessible Municipal Services. Workshop addresses all key requirements of O. Reg. 429/07 including:
- Principles of Accessible Customer Service
- The power of Inclusive Language
- Your role in Accessible Customer Service – How to wear an Access Lens (including scenario based exercises)
- Types of Accommodation
- How to Provide Accessible Communication and Communication Technologies
- Architectural Accessibility – Role of Accessible Physical Environments in Customer Service
- Use of Service Animals and Support persons
- How to provide Notice of Temporary Disruptions
- Project was designed according to a train-the-trainer approach and included creation of a Facilitator's Handbook/Training Guide. Workshop was piloted to 35 training staff and was facilitated internally to 17,000 employees.
- Township of West Lincoln
- Client participates in a Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee. Partnership involves assisting six independent municipalities with unique needs and approaches who have come together to ensure compliance with the AODA. Group works together cooperatively; however, The Herrington Group services each municipality as an individual client. THG has maintained JAAC as a client for all accessibility consulting needs since its inception.
- Author of a 250 page Disability Awareness Resource Toolkit that served as a primer to AODA Standards and also addressed barriers identified within the municipalities' Accessibility Plans. The Toolkit includes five modules:
- Accessibility Standards and Architectural Access Toolkit
- Customer Service Toolkit
- Employee Accommodation Toolkit
- Fire and Evacuation Strategies Toolkit
- Information and Communication Access Toolkit
- Content was determined through a municipal-wide needs assessment conducted by The Herrington Group. The toolkit includes an overview of each area, its accessibility requirements and challenges. Each section addresses accessibility needs using practical examples, sample implementation tools and a list of additional resources.

Accessibility Planning, Policy and Strategy Development and AODA Compliance Support
- Canadian Tourism and Human Resources Council (with DesignAble Environments Inc.)

- Client contracted The Herrington Group to conduct a peer review of an internally drafted Accessible Customer Service Policy, conduct a training gaps analysis study across all regional departments, to facilitate an existing workshop and to create a training workshop for outside workers in compliance with O. Reg. 429/07
- THG conducted a policy analysis and made recommendations to revise and clarify the Policy ensuring compliance with O. Reg. 429/07 and the Ontario Human Rights Code. Prepared policy for final approval
- Conducted an internal needs assessment to determine resources available to support compliance requirements under O. Reg. 429/07 and to identify gaps and needs
- Facilitated Region's internally authored Accessible Customer Service Workshop to 200 staff
- Designed a specialized workshop in compliance with O. Reg. 429/07 focusing on roles and responsibilities of Public Works staff. Workshop included:

- The Niagara Parks Commission
- Provide ongoing accessibility consulting support to the Commission including policy review, training material review, policy development and compliance strategy development
- Conducted policy analysis of the client's Accessible Customer Service Policy and made recommendations to revise and clarify the Policy ensuring compliance with O. Reg. 429/07 and the Ontario Human Rights Code. Prepared policy for final approval

- Analyzed Draft Accessibility Standards of the AODA; provided an analysis of Standard Drafts including: impact and effect on the client, the corporation's responsibilities to meet minimum legal requirements and action required to achieve compliance
- Prepared and submitted comments to the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario outlining the client's position on the Accessibility Standard Drafts.

Accessibility Auditing Projects
- Brock University
- Accessibility Audits of 33 facilities reviewing accessibility for students, staff and the general public (including offices, lecture halls, theatres, recreational areas, outdoor spaces, play spaces, and parking facilities) using THG's standardized process. Project was completed in 120 days. Audits included mobility, sensory and cognitive accessibility needs. Addressed way finding, signage, paths of travel, installation of existing accessibility components, communication technologies, fire safety and evacuation plans.
- Phase Two of this project involved the creation of Design Standards for the University. THG worked in partnership with Designable Environments Inc for this component.
- City of Kitchener
- Client participates in a Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee. Accessibility audits of 137 facilities and exterior areas (including municipal offices, community centres, public pools, arenas, parking facilities and parks). Project was completed in 180 days.
- Halton District School Board
- Accessibility Audits of 63 schools including parking and exterior areas all interior areas including staff areas (office; staff room), classrooms, gymnasiums, auditoriums, washrooms, change rooms and cafeterias. Project and was completed in 180 days. On-site audits of all facilities were completed in 40 days.

- City of St. Catharines
- Provide ongoing accessibility consulting support to the Commission including policy review, training material review, policy development and compliance strategy development

- Reviewed and assessed funding proposals to this program for the Office for Disability Issues
